I've been talking with someone regarding GPS data availability from a phone's hotpsot - to be used for navigation purposes by a non-cellular iPad tethered to that hotpsot. I haven't found anything definitive written down but below is my interpretation of what I think occurs. Anyone with more solid info?
The hotpsot does not transmit GPS data. You do get some location data via the hotpsot but not GPS-sourced data. I believe you're getting WiFi or cellular triangulation data. I've tried moving map s/w with my iPad tethered to the phone and location accuracy is not great and it appears to a low position update rate. And in the absence of a WiFi or cell signal, I don't think you'll get any position data from the hotspot at all (much less any other data, of course).
