First, by “Lock-out screen” I’m talking about the screen that appears when you pick up your iPhone (SE v2, iOS 26.2 here); I don’t think that’s the proper term for it but I’m getting senile.
Anyhoo, sometime between iOS 26 and 26.2, the amount of time that screen stays on has dropped to about one second. I often pick up my phone just to check the time, or the weather, or the battery level, or a timer while I’m cooking, all which I can do without unlocking the phone via TouchID. With only 1 second before the screen goes dark again, I can’t check those things in time (especially opening the timer).
I’ve been trying to find the place where I can extend that time back to about the 5 seconds where it used to be; I’ve checked Settings >General, Display & Brightness, Home Screen, Standby, Wallpaper, even Accessibility; but I can’t find that particular control. I know it’s gotta be here somewhere, but can’t find it.
Any help? TIA!

Thank you, but "Auto Lock" is greyed out. I'll keep futzing with it.

Is your phone on low power mode, or are there parental controls active?
My phone was on low power mode, and after recharging the Auto Lock could now be changed. I cycled it from 2 Minutes to 3 Minutes, and then back to 2 Minutes, but that's not my problem; that time is how long it takes my lock screen to come on after I've logged into my phone.
MY problem is when I first pick up the phone; I see the Lock Screen, and I used to have 5 seconds or so to either engage Touch ID (to open the phone), or hit the Timer; now I only have a second or so to take any action.

And I'm thinking it is a setting somewhere on my own phone; it's so irritating that more people would have been mentioning it, but there's nothing.

If I were in your position, I would go to settings > reset all settings. That will put your phone back to default settings, which should fix your problem. However, you will need to re-enter your home WifI password etc.

I know exactly what you are talking about. This has been a thing for me so long I've gotten used to it.

I keep a finger on the screen slightly shifting its position, doesn't matter where on the screen but generally I keep slowly scrolling a notification as I read the previews. This keeps the display active.

What device are you on? Timers stay on the Lock Screen like a little widget on iPhone. Search Clock in settings, goto notifications, and set 'Show Previews' to always. That way a brief glance will show it too you. You can also add a weather and battery level widget to the lock screen.

So while you can't change that 5 seconds you can get all the information you need within that 5 seconds.

I know a lot of people don't want to use it but you can also use Siri for that information. I use it a lot with cooking timers so I don't need to touch my phone when my hands are dirty.

The time the screen is on waiting to be unlocked is much shorter on IOS 26 then IOS 18 (or whatever I was running). This is annoying. This is NOT the auto-lock timeout.

I would also like a setting (with all these new font size setting) to change the font size for the battery percentage icon, but there does not appear to be one. There was not one in the old IOS either. The battery percentage number is very hard for me to see, its too small.
