I have had this problem off and on for a while. I have a June 2009 15" MBP (2.8Ghz Core2Duo 4Gb RAM). Every once in a while after the lock screen gets engaged, the computer becomes completely unresponsive. Apple logo is dark. Status light is dark. Attached external monitor is dark. If I close the lid (hoping to put it to sleep then wake) the status light turns on solid (no sleep flashing). If I open the lid again the status light goes dark.

Most of the time this has happened I lock the screen and walk away from my desk. I come back and it is unresponsive. Just now I locked the screen and it immediately did this.

I just went through resetting PRAM, SMC but I don't expect that will "cure" the problem. Anyone else ever have this problem and what did/do you do to fix it. Crossing my fingers that Lion will resolve but don't really expect it to.

PS. I can't remember this happening at home connected to my Apple Cinema Display. All the times I remember this happening have been at work.
