So is the dimmed lock screen a bug or is it by design?

every update its been dimmed.

Whether you're using photo shuffle or a single picture its dimmed. Since its been in every beta it makes me start to worry its by designed.

When you go into the customization of the lock screen like the clock, the wallpaper will brighten to what it used to be. When you save it, it dims it again.

Very annoying if it really is by design.

Seems intentional. The lock screen brightens whenever there are no notifications on-screen. As soon as one appears, the whole wallpaper dims. This is probably to improve legibility.

Damn that sucks.

I’ve used iPhones since the iPhone 4 and I think this is the first time I ever hate a design and actually dread using it.

Exactly this. They introduced the dimming for notifications around B5. It should only dim when you scroll up to view notifications, at least on my 14PM the dimming only occurs when I scroll up.

Here is a perfect example to help figure out if it’s my phone or the way it’s supposed to be.

The brighter picture is immediately after I hold the lock screen and click customize then save. It stays bright.

The darker picture is after the phone locks and wakes up and stays that dim.

Is that what it’s like for everyone else or should it stay as bright as the other one?

No that’s definitely not normal, it should brighten back up when you touch the display. The only time mine dims like that is if I have notifications and I swipe up to start viewing them.

Ahh good to know, yeah mine is being weird for sure. Hopefully the next beta or the final one fixes it.
