Lock Screen turns on during Google Maps usage?

Hey all,

I noticed that recently while using Google Maps, the screen will get darker and eventually I will need to go through the lock screen to get back to it. It used to just get darker until the screen is black but a touch would wake it back up. Is this part of 4.3.1 or something I can change in settings?
