I've an iPhone 5 locked to orange/tmobile UK, and travelling to the USA. Would a T-Mobile USA sim work in it ok?

Thanks

This, costs £20 plus a few pence, you need to have had it on an active contract/PAYG for 6 months for them to do it, takes about a week, had mine done this way last month

That's a rip off. Vodafone and O2 unlock iPhones free of charge.

The most recent iPhone has some good hardware: 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, 32 GB of storage, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 3-megapixel camera.

Sadly orange will only unlock if I've served my minimum term. It's jailbroken, how can I go about unlocking it myself?
