Locked or unlocked?

Just made a micro sim from a working /normal sized PAYG UK O2 sim and installed it in my iPhone 4 (Sonera FI).

I am getting no error messages when booting the iphone, there is no signal and no carrier option in Settings. Does this mean that phone is locked to my carrier?

When you install a different carrier SIM, should one normally receive a message /acknowledgement?

Found the answer: I should get an "invalid SIM" message when I insert a sim card from a different carrier when phone is locked.

It is very likely that I botched the cut down sim hence no signal etc.
