I got my new Macbook Air M1 today and transferred all my data from my old Macbook Pro to it (using the Migration Assistant).

I am however now not able to log in as the log in page refuses to accept the Computer Screen password ... which I am 100% sure is being entered correctly, with the right key board; Any ideas about how do I reset the computer screen log in password (not the Apple Id pw). After a few attempts which were not recognized by the Macbook Air, the message appears now that the "account is locked". I understand I might need to wait a day before I can try again.... but any advise about what I should do would be highly appreciated.

I'd speak to Apple Support and see what they say. If you bought direct from Apple you have 90 days free support.
Just making sure, but is it asking for your user account password or the system password?

Thanks... am speaking to Apple Support a little later in the day and will update here what they say. It's asking for the User Account password, not the Apple ID password. And the message still shows account is locked. Screen shot enclosed.

Spoke to Apple support and they were most responsive and helpful. Glad to say, the issue was resolved as they guided me thru' the steps to reset the User account password. They also forwarded a link giving the various alternate methods for resetting of password which I am posting here for benefit of anyone else who might face a similar issue.

You can also reset the password using the Terminal option in the Recovery Console

type: resetpassword and then tap enter and follow the prompts.

wow.
that’s a big security risk though , isn’t it?

is it really that easy to bypass the password of a mac that one has physical access to?

In order to access the recovery console, you have to know the admin passcode. I have two admin accounts. If one account gets corrupt or gets locked out after an OS update etc., I can use the other admin account to reset the password of the first admin account.

I've been doing the same thing since the earliest releases of Mac OS X. Haven't had to use it in years though.
