locked out

greetings, I am new here, so please forgive me if this has been asked 100 times.
I recently have become locked out of my user/administrator account.
...
I have tried resetting the bios
booting up in safe mode
letting the computer sit unplugged until the battery died

twice each

and also a 'sudo ln -s private/tmp/tmp'
suggestion I saw in a trouble shooting forum

nothing has worked to gain access to my user account

I even tried to update to the newest version of OSX

thinking the new update would cure whatever is going on

I am able to access stuff with the guest account, but not my user account

any suggestions?

barring a total re-install of the software I mean

I have almost 4 years of photos, music, and art programs, I do not wish to lose ....
thank you in advance for any suggestions

well, the first Idea would have only worked if logged in

I was unable to do so
even though I was able to use my admin password to add the OSX update I mentioned .....from the guest account


the second; CMD + R at reboot

.....gave me the opportunity to restore the computer to the way it was before
using 'Time Machine'


now, I just have to get updates
