iPod Locked

I just got my replacement Ipod (3rd generation clickwheel) and when I install I-tunes and pop in my I-Pod, it won't let me play the music from my I-pod. There's a lock at the bottom (where it says how my gb you have/used). I called Apple and they said to re-install I-tunes and I've done that and its still the same thing. How do I fix this?

Have you are set the iPod to manual update in Preferences?
