locking catches on MBP not functioning properly

My post is about a recent problem i am experiencing with the locking catches on my MBP, normally when I used to close the lid it would lock straight away, but now I am having to hold it closed, sometimes for up to a minute before the little catches drop down and lock it, does anyone have any ideas on how to sort this? has it happened to others?
