Locking iPad screen & buttons from kids?

My wife would like to know if there is a way to lock the screen & or buttons from kids while iPad is being used by a kid?

Is there an app or something?

Are you trying to keep them from being able to use the buttons to turn it on, or are you trying to keep them from actually using it (i.e. the passcode)? I don't know of any way to make the buttons non-functional, but the passcode at least will keep them from unlocking it.
