Is there any utility that will log what files get changed when you apply a setting?

I'm having a serious issue where changing a simple setting in WordPress (General->Settings, site URL) takes down my Mac OS Websites, including, Wiki, even if I change it back. Some file gets permanently changed and my only recourse is to restore from a backup.

(Removing MAMP, WordPress, the WordPress database, rebooting, etc., doesn't fix this, either.)
