Logging off, though all i saw was a blue screen with the spinning circle

I went to log off on my mac pro but instead of the log-in screen all I got for hours ( as I went out the house) was a blue screen and that small spinning circle in the middle.

I had to switch off and then turn the mac back on. Though the mac is working pefectly in general

Any body else found this?
