logging out with time machine running

Can I log out while time machine is backing up? I corrupted my time machine disk somehow and this is the only thing that makes sense. Surely, Apple would have taken this into account, wouldn't they?
 
Yes, if you log out during a backup the session will just stop and resume when you log back in, nothing will go wrong.
