Just a heads up: this update screwed up my primary user account's password, and I could not log back in after the update had completed.

The update was a bit of the usual back-and-forth on the progress - multiple restarts and "updating..." sessions etc. before it was completely installed - and when finally done and rebooted my normal user account's password was no longer accepted. This got me extra nervous since the whole drive is encrypted via APFS, I thought I'd have to reinstall everything, but the password of my admin account still worked so I managed to log in on that account and from there reset my regular user's password.

Just wanted to share and hoping no one else got bitten by this. Could be a disaster for people who only use the admin account and lose access to it.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but this exact problem just manifested again with Security Update 2020-003 released yesterday the 26th.

Does anyone have any advice on how to approach Apple with a bug report that will actually reach them and hopefully be taken seriously?

FWIW I do everything as a Standard user but I usually set up each computer with two Admin users. Just in case I have problems with one of them.

Also I run Carbon Copy Cloner every night to copy my files from my laptop to an old Mac Pro I have as a server. This isn't too power intensive, because the cMP is normally sleeping. Thru the magic of (whatever) the Airport Extreme wakes up the cMP in the middle of the night when CCC runs.

I don't have a "no backups" problem. I just don't want the hassle of having to redo my main user's setup.

Just got hit by this bug. Nothing is working. The Mac does not accept my Apple ID to reset the password. Any fixes?

You could try this, but it looks like you'd have to create a new account, unfortunately

Can't log in to Mac after installing macOS 10.14 Mojave

If you're having trouble logging into your Mac or MacBook after installing macOS 10.14 Mojave, or you're stuck in a loop where you log in, then get logged out again, the following steps might help.

First, restart your Mac and hold down the Command + S keys on your keyboard as it boots up.

This will boot you into a command prompt. Now, enter in the following:

/sbin/mount -uw /
Press Enter on your keyboard. Then enter in the following:

rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
This removes a file, which makes it appear like you're starting Mojave up for the first time. Don't worry, nothing important is getting deleted. Press Enter, then restart your Mac.

You will then be asked to create a new admin user account.

This just happened again, with Security Update 2020-004. Problem still not fixed. F***ing hell, Apple... can your developers get their sh*t together already?
