I chose Hands Off over Little Snitch for its ability to impose application write restrictions and to manage incoming as well as outgoing connections. Right after installation, unfortunately, I began to experience login issues.
Specifically: password entry is unproblematic, but the screen either (1) stalls on the login page or a grey screen immediately thereafter, or (2) moves past the login screen and displays the desktop background, but not the menu bar or dock -- or just the menu bar, but without most of its icons (sometimes just the Apple symbol, Finder, File, Edit, View, Go, Window, and Help). In case 1, the cursor turns into a spinning beachball and remains that way seemingly indefinitely; in case 2, it's a pointer as it ought to be, but nothing is clickable.
It invariably takes at least four attempts (three forced shutdowns) before things start up normally. While I've heard of other users having similar issues, I haven't located any detailed explanations or resolutions; most of them seem to have uninstalled the software.
This is happening on a MacBook running OSX 10.7.2 (2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3), with HandsOff set as a login item.
Any ideas? Thanks.
