Login window upon wake does not display with external display connected

When My Mac is connected to an external display, and I wake it from sleep, the login window will not display. The cursor still does display.

I can type in my password, knowing that the password field is automatically the active field on the login window, and login into my account fine.

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.3 with all updates applied.

Any ideas on how to fix?
