I'm running a black MacBook (most recent in that line) with Leopard 10.5.6.
About 20 minutes ago I noticed my fan going off like crazy. I went into activity monitor and found prl_disp_service (something to do with Parallels, which I wasn't even running) taking up most of my CPU. So I force quit it, but a few processes (basic ones, Firefox, last.fm, etc.) were still taking up 20-30% CPU each and the fan still roared. I closed the computer for a minute, opened it back up, and nothing displayed. So I force shut it down and restarted it.
When I turned the computer back on, once again prl_disp_service was for some reason open and taking all my CPU. I killed it and this time, the fan went back to normal, as have my other apps, but now I've got two very strange problems (that happened both times):
-loginwindow is taking up 40-60% of my CPU.
-kernel_task has a growing number of threads. It's currently up to 1268 and getting a couple more per second.
What could be going on?
UPDATE: I killed loginwindow (logging me out and back in), and that seems to have solved the problem. It's been 20 minutes. kernel_task is steady at 58 threads. But I'm still curious what's going on.... it doesn't seem good.
