I have done a fair amount of research on this subject, but I still have some questions, specifically with getting a new phone through "normal" methods.

I have a 3GS that I was going to give to someone (already on AT&T, currently using a Razr) when the new iPhone comes out. We have decided that it would be better for her to get a new 3G for $99 now, and then I sell my 3GS on eBay. So how exactly would the APN Changer and/or Data Block work with a new phone? I know that if you are using a phone already in use, turn on the Wi-Fi and use the unlockit.co.nz site or use SBsettings to turn off 3G and Edge. But if you get a new iPhone through AT&T/Apple the data plan will automatically get added. I've read that people have called AT&T and said their iPhone was "lost" and they use "another phone", but AT&T asks for an IMEI number. If we do that, which IMEI number should we use? I'm pretty sure AT&T will see the discrepancy on their network and automatically add the data plan. And between the unlockit website vs SBsettings, is one better than another?

If I remember correctly, AT&T uses your existing SIM card when you buy it through them, Apple gives you a new one. So, if we get the 3G, would it be better to get it through AT&T so we have the original SIM card from the Razr, or would that not make a difference?

I've also read about two occasions when those who do not get the data plan lose Visual Voicemail. I tried following them, but those threads ended right after the problem was posted. Has this been resolved, or is it still a problem?

And yes, she's well educated on the subject of not having an iPhone with a data plan and fully aware of what she can/can't do. But the benefits she will get out of it exceed them.
