When I grade papers for my programming class, I have the PDF of the student’s printouts on my iPad Pro 11 and the grading rubric on my Mini 5 (landscape mode), opened from OneNote. OneNote has a great option to mark up PDFs using a pencil, but I have been annoyed going back and forth between the Pencil 2 on the iPP 11 and the Pencil 1 on the Mini 5. I’d looked in the the Crayon back when I started working this way in March or April but they were in short supply so I just forgot about it.

Made it through the spring semester and summer (very few students) but today I was grading midterm exams and there was a lot of marking notes on the printouts and recording points on the rubric. Local Apple store had them in stock, educational discount price plus tax was same as Amazon but I could pick up today so I did.

I can choose the red pen on the iPP 11, blue pen on the Mini 5 and write on both with the Crayon without any hassle.

If I ever get around to drawing on either iPad, I’ll use the respective Apple Pencils, but the Crayon is going to make grading papers so much easier because I don’t have to keep track of which pencil I need on which iPad. I’ll probably use the Crayon on the Mini 5 a good bit.

Anyway, I have a feeling I’m going to wish that I’d gotten the Crayon months ago.

I am also using two iPads (a smaller mini and a bigger 10.2 7th gen that is soon going to be replaced by the new 4th gen Air). As I can‘t use my 1st gen Pencil on the new Air, I was looking for a pencil for the latter.

Found a great deal on the Logitech Crayon, that cost me much less than the 2nd gen Pencil in my country (49 vs. 129 for the Pencil). Figured I‘ll be able to use the Crayon on both iPads. Apple has updated their compatibility list on their store listing for the crayon to also include the brand-new 4th gen iPad Air.

I‘m absolutely loving the Crayon so far, preferring it over the Apple Pencil as well.

1. Better grip, easier to hold
2. Can be used with both iPads (Lightning and USB-C models)
3. No pairing or Bluetooth needed, easy switching between both iPads
4. Feels less „mushy“ on default settings than the pressure-sensitive Pencil
5. Can be charged with a standard iPhone cable, no clunky adapter or connecting to Lightning port needed
6. Inexpensive (62% less than the Pencil 2, on the deal I got)

I‘ve tried the Apple Pencil 2 in-store, which is better than the 1st gen Pencil (including the magnetic wireless charging) but would still get the Crayon for form factor and compatibility and „portability“ between different iPads.

I won‘t be drawing much though, where the Pencil‘s pressure sensitivity should give it the edge.

I have a cheap AliExpress Apple Pencil clone for $17 that I got for my 11" Pro.

Bought for the wife and kid each the basic iPad during this Black Friday and was pleasantly surprised that this knock off also worked on their iPads without needing to pair/unpair and we can all just share the pencil (my wife and I hardly draw or write).

I only write with my crayon. I have Apple pencils for the iPads for when I’m using just one iPad at a time, but the crayon works great for writing.

I used the Crayon and took it back. I didn't like the shape of it. In its place, I purchased the Adonit Note+ and found that to be a very good alternative to the Apple Pencil for use on the iPad Mini and Pro 11 as the OP described.
