I thought the First Gen Mac Pro 8-core optical out offered 5.1 digital sound out. But when I attach it to my Mac Pro via the optical connector, I only get Stereo not 5.1. I selected digital out in the system sound control panel. Anyone have any idea why I am only getting a stereo signal?

Go to your spotlight and type MIDI, go to the Audio MIDI Setup and configure your heart out ;)

It only supports 5.1 out if your SOUND SOURCE (say a DVD with 5.1 Dolby) puts out 5.1 channels.

The above response is good. Just to elaborate, some apps, like VLC, when playing back something with 5.1 will have options for 'Digital Output' and 'Digital Output (encoded)'. Obviously it's the latter that you want.

Cycle through the effects (Stereo, 6CH, StereoX2, DDPLII, etc) by pushing repeatedly the Logitech's controller's Effects button.
