Long delay with open/save dialog boxes

This problem has been pissing me off for a while now, and it started with 10.3.9.

Any program I use now, when I go to Open... or Save as..., the app beach balls and I wait, 10 seconds to as long as 30 second for the dialog box to open.

Why is it doing this??? I have no network volumes mounted so I cannot see any reason for long pauses.

Anyone else with this problem?

Have you got any NFS mounts open? I found that with these up the connections would go to sleep, and so when an app wanted to access the discing they'd have to re-establish the connection.

Also the iDisk on your desktop seems to slow it up a bit for me too.

No, no network volumes mounted at all. Only an USB 2 drive, but even on machines without that drive, there's the pause.

I hope this isn't some lame "repair permissions" problem
