Long(ish!) files names in Finder are driving me UP THE WALL!

Got a MBP recently, loving it. Completely.

But finder is driving me crazy, with a file name such as "Star Wars - Episode I - The Phantom Menace" displaying as "Star ...ace.avi". (see attached image.) The only way to see the entire file name is to increase the icon size dramatically (see image #2), or to increase the grid spacing dramatically. In Windows, the next row is bumped down slightly by one row of text at a time to display the full file name, AND without displaying the file extension.

Is there anyway to enable such "smarter" handling of "long" file names in Finder as well as a global switch for disabling file extensions from being shown? (Note: For the second issue, toggling "Finder>Preferences>Advanced>Show all filename extensions" does NOT work, even for folders on the local hard drive, let alone my externals.

Use List View.

Make sure you only have that folder in List View. Otherwise you get everything in List View.
