Long Restarts and Shutdowns On Late 2013 13" MBPr

Whenever I restart or shutdown my late 2013 13" MBPr, it takes a while to shutdown or restart. Sometimes I get a dark gray circle spinning in a grey background. Is this an issue with OS X Mavericks and the retina display MBP? My aunts' mid 2012 13" i7/8/750 HDD non-retina mbp does not have this issue.
