That thing was holding on for dear life. It was fighting me, even kinda dodging my tweezers.

What is it?

That would be a tick.

Hopefully you got the pincers out otherwise it could cause an infection.

Researching a bit, it looks like I got the whole thing. It couldn't have been attached to my little guy for very long, since we're close with him every day. I'll keep an eye on him for any unhealthy symptoms.

Do you live in the city or something. Dogs around here get ticks all the time, but rarely do they ever get sick.

Get some frontguard medicine for your dog. It helps repel ticks.

you ought to check your dog over carefully to make sure he doesn't have any more. ticks are nasty things. looks like you got hold of this one before it started to feast.

Reminds me of this thread I posted a while ago:

I remember that! Whatever bit you looks just like what I found today.

Anyway, Mackenzie has been fine all night, so I guess he's ok.

I live in sort of a suburban area, with a huge farmer's field behind my place. That's likely where he got his little friend. We bathed him tonight and gave him a good comb over to try to find more, but found nothing.

Thanks all.

Deer tick. Bring it to the vet and they can test it.
Uh... it looks more like a dog tick from this angle... American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. Hard to tell for sure unless you look at its mouthparts and ventrum under a scope, which pretty much any veterinary or medical lab can do for you if you care enough to submit it through your veterinarian.

You mean Frontline? Advantix also works well.

Have fun.
