I've had my iPhone 13 PM since Monday, upgrading from a 11PM. I am struck every day at how good the battery life and screen are compared to the 11PM. I could charge this thing once every two days and have a lot of room to spare. The screen is bright, sharp, and animations are extremely smooth with Pro Motion. Looking at older pictures is a joy on the screen. The camera is a huge step up, with 3x zoom being a joy to use early in my testing.

In contrast, when testing the 12PM, I was struck at how similar the experience was relative to the 11PM. The UI, screen, and capabilities of the phone were more or less unchanged from the 11PM. Sure, the form factor was better, and the zoom on the camera got a little bit better, but otherwise the phone was the same. And you took a hit on the battery life. Frankly, this applies to the regular 11 to 12 as well - aside from the switch to LCD, the 11 was a great phone that offered two good cameras, strong battery life, and fun colors. The 12 didn't improve on that all that much. The 13 adds back the strong battery life and a big improvement in camera (though the 11 is still a powerhouse).

Even the 13 Mini is a dramatically better buy than the 12, as you get useable battery life and the same camera improvements.

TLDR - it is almost never the right move to get the iPhone with the "form factor change" - it is usually better to wait until the next, more refined iteration, which is what the 13/13P/13PM

1. Battery size = 13 Pro Max > 12 Pro Max > 11 Pro Max
2. Battery life = 13 Pro Max > 11 Pro Max > 12 Pro Max
3. Display Refresh = 13 Pro Max 120hz > both the 11 Pro Max & 12 Pro @ 60hz
4. Display Brightness = 13 Pro Max 1000 nits > 12 Pro Max 825 nits > 11 Pro Max 770 nits
5. Display Size = 12 Pro Max & 13 Pro 6.7 in > 11 Pro Max 6.5 in
6. Display Screen:Body Ratio = 13 Pro Max > both 11 Pro Max & 12 Pro Max
7. CPU = 13 Pro Max > 12 Pro Max > 11 Pro Max.
8. GPU = 13 Pro Max 5 core > 11 Pro Max & 12 Pro Max 4 core.
9. Low Light & Zoom Photo/Video = 13 Pro Max > 12 Pro Max > 11 Pro Max
10. Stability of Camera = 13 Pro Max SSS > 12 Pro Max OIS > 11 Pro Max no OIS or SSS
11. Photo Modes = 13 Pro Max
12. Cinematic & Macro Camera = 13 Pro Max
13. ProRaw Photo= 12 Pro Max & 13 Pro Max
14. ProRes Video = 13 Pro Max

Screen to body ratio of both 13PM and 12PM are the same at 87.4%

I'm sure that the 13PM is better than the 12PM in multiple respects. The one respect the 12PM is better, for me, that the 13PM is that I already have the 12PM. I don't have to go through the hassle of buying the 13PM. Expense. Doing a trade in to get some of the money back.

so, the latest iPhone is better than previous models. Go figure

People are biased towards physical redesigns, but often times innovative or valuable additions don't come until the original design is refined in the years that follow. The 5S brought Touch ID, the 6S brought 3D Touch, the 11 upgraded the camera in a major way. I've always been partial to what used to be the "S" year for this very reason.

Completely agree. For me the 12 wasn’t much of an improvement on the 11 series, just introduced flat sides.

Yea the iPhone 13 series is where the separation starts. I think the 13 pro/pm will be the last 120hz notch phone for a while

I think the pattern would be a redesign year vs significant internal/component upgrade year.
12 was a redesign year. 13 is a significant internal upgrade year (battery life, camera). It's been this way for ages.
eg. 5 to 5s, 6 to 6s, X to Xs (the X has the same internal as the iPhone 8), 12 to 13.

When buying an iPhone, imo the redesign year is usually not a good buy, and better to wait for the next year iPhone for the actual refinements.

I am on the 13 bandwagon and it’s an awesome phone but the 12 also brought Qualcomm back after years of intel modems. Don’t sleep on that.

However the 13 pro is amazing - can’t deny that.
