Hey folks,

I'm just about to invest in a Studio with a couple of Studio displays, but for coding work I'd like to add a 5K display which can be switched to vertical orientation. I previously had a Dell UP2715K which did the trick but the connectivity doesn't match the Studio (it needed two mDP connections).

Could anyone make a recommendation?

For the Dell UP2715K, you can use a Thunderbolt to Dual DisplayPort adapter.

Apple Studio Display has a VESA mount adapter. So does LG UltraFine 5K.

Most displays offer a VESA mount (every 5K display I know of does), if they don't already offer the ability to rotate (pivot) the display with the existing stand.

If you're using a Mac, you'll be doing yourself a favor by limiting your selection to displays that offer a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 connection method to start with. Many of the LG models (and of course Apple's) offer it and I suspect Dell has more than a few as well.

The Apple Studio Display supports portrait orientation. It even has a sensor that will auto-rotate the image on the Mac. Get the VESA mount version and a reasonably priced arm.

That would be great, if true in the context of this discussion. The Studio Display STAND supports Tilt and Height adjustments only, the DISPLAY supports pivot/orientation – but that works with every display you can connect to the Mac (that physically pivots).

Unfortunately, to get the Studio Display to use the orientation feature, you have to have a way to physically pivot the display – which is only possible with a VESA mount.

If you're able to physically pivot the display with the standard stand or the height adjustable stand (no VESA mount), I would love to see a photo of it because it would be a huge selling point.

But that's not what the OP asked. He asked for 5K displays that could be used in portrait. The ASD with VESA mount can do just that. He didn't specify that he wasn't interested in the VESA mount option.

I think you missed the post just above yours.

And you edited your post to reflect the VESA option. Your original post only said the Studio Display supports portrait orientation, as seen in the screenshot below:

Yes, I did edit it. Because I forgot to mention the VESA mount. I have two VESA mount Studio Displays - one in landscape, one in portrait. The VESA option, IMHO, is the way to go.

May then Type C cable is not up to bandwidth! did you use high speed usb c cable or an older cabler?
plus did you open with the System Preference-Sound panel, and click the sound effects toggle bar and select selected devices!

This is excellent. I'll check out my options for 5K VESA-compatible panels and take it from there. I've never properly looked into VESA mounting before, but better late than never.

Thanks folks :)

I think your options are exactly two: LG Ultrafine 5K and Apple Studio Display VESA version.

I bought two VESA Studio Displays and two Amazon Basics VESA arms. Not the worlds greatest VESA arm, but once positioned, I have no need to keep moving them, so they work fine for me.

I'm leaning towards the Ultrafine. It's going to be primarily for coding work, so the two Studio displays will be dedicated for visuals.

That makes the price difference all the better 🙂
If you're already buying two Studio Displays like you first mentioned, why not just get one (or both) with a VESA mount? Unless you need three displays, seems like you could save some money by going with at least one ASD that is rotatable.

I've been looking for an excuse to expand to three displays for a while.
