Have you tried Personalized Google? It gives you that exact option to pick and choose what information you want displayed.

I go for the BBC as my homepage too, but I prefer the main news page myself.

i never bothered to change mine from apple.com/startpage but before i got my macbook, i used my personalized google page. I think jcarm24 made a good suggestion with the personalized google page.
