looking for a good scanner

i was browsing around to find a good scanner for my pops, but dont know what to look for. i keep running into the all-in-one or the film/slide scanners, which i dont need. my cousin, who lives next door to me, has a great film/slide scanner that scans 4000 dpi.

all i need is a good hi-res scanner, so pops can scan all our old photos (not film, but the actual pictures). any recommendations?

also, he is using a 450mhz Cube w/ 640mb ram. do u guys think this will be sufficient to do this task?
