Looking for a good tool to repair permissions and perform other routine tasks

I explained my MBP problem in this thread and AppleCare support advised me to repair my permissions.

Now I know there are about a dozen apps that do this, but can you give me some recommendations? I want 'the best' if there's even such a thing.
Paid or free, I don't care ... as long as I don't have to wipe my entire system.

Have you tried the one built in the OS. Everyone seems to have good luck with that one...

Disk repair utility?
I just repaired my permissions using that.

One side question: what if the disk repair utility says: "The volume is OK" ... then I don't need to repair it, right?

OK, repaired my permissions for the first time in 6 months and my system's a LOT faster ...

When you have problems or when you think it's time. I do mine monthly just to check...

And will performing these tasks 'too' often do any harm to your system?

No, but there's no need to do it regularly.
