-So I have a UMBP
-I am a photographer
-I need a monitor that is 24" or greater
-I have around $500-850 to spend
-Working on a mac so driver support is pretty important
-Already owned the HP LP2475W and the colors were too saturated even when calibrated...

So what do you guys have for me??

Thanks

people say that dell is the same as the h LP2475W I had and doesnt that have a lot of quality issues??

Ghost- I'm in a simlar boat - looking for 24" of color accuracy for photo printing - so perhaps my research will help.

I bot an NEC this week, the P221W, on Shutterbug's David Brooks' very thorough write up (xbit labs was positive too), but might return it for the real estate of a 24". Back to square one.

The review of the Dell U2410 was prety solid on TFTcentral.co.uk

The review of the new HP was pretty solid on bit-tech.net

Read through these and let me know what you think as a photographer.

There isn't much choice. Aside from trying the Dell, which as you say is using the same panel and has issues, the next step up are the NEC 2490WUXi and 2690WUXi. Any of these displays can be a good solution for colour critical work, but the likely hood is you will need to return multiple displays until you get a good one, perhaps more so with HP and Dell.

should I wait for those new 27" ips displays coming out?

Might be worth it, they may have resolved issues on the circuitry side, but then they are going to be in the same price range as the NECs which are regarded as the best 1920x1200 displays for photography and digital imaging.

problem im having now is that the Dell U2410 is the same as the hp lp2475w i had and it was was wide gamut. the 24" ACD is great and convenient but thats about it since its not that great for photo editing... also I would get the NEC LCD2490WUXi but they only sell the LCD2490WUXi2 which sucks because of no polarizer. this is my dilemma..... :(:(:(

There was a NEC LCD2490WUXi with the polarizer and they it got replaced by the LCD2490WUXi2 with no polarizer

looks like the Dell U2711 will be wide gamut :(

I'm going to bank on the next NEC 24" or a HP ZR24w that was just announced and is supposedly sRGB no wide gamut....

Wide gamut is not bad per say but not all programs will use it and as a result you will see the colors of your photo reproduced/displayed differently acress different programs. Also PVA is not bad but IPS is just better:)

You might want to try the displays sub-forum over at [H]ard|Forum, it's the best place for display discussion, especially on the higher end.

So if I shoot in adobe RGB and RAW, does it matter if I get a monitor that is wide gamut or not? What are positives / negatives of wide gamut monitors?

The U2410 is a great product, IF you are lucky in the "Dell Lottery". I bought a U2410 and after what I've been through to get a decent monitor, I should have gone for the NEC in the first place. The U2410 has a lot of problems, bad icc profile, dithering and more or less heavy blue/green tint on a third of the screen.

I'm not fully up to date on the quality of the ACD, but Apple is at least very cooperative when it comes to replacements of faulty units.
