I've unfortunately lost the white brick power adapter I had for my old PowerBook G4 DVI 667 Mhz, and I'm hoping to reuse the machine as a local server. My first thought was to head over to Apple.com and buy a new one. While I find Apple's $80 price tag for a power adapter to be absolutely outrageous, at the same time I'm skeptical of the cheaper third party adapters out there.

My question is simply: Am I being overly cautious about going with a third party AC adapter, or are my concerns warranted? Has anyone had experiences, good or bad, with non-Apple branded power sources?

I have a 3rd party adapter for my G3 iBook and it's served me fine.

on the other side, I bought a third party battery and it died after two cycles.

hit and miss.

adapters are usually pretty good though no need to worry
