Looking for a Portable Non-Tape/Non-HD Video Recorder

I'm looking for a portable video recording solution, something that preferable records to SD cards, but internal memory would be OK too. I need something that can record clean audio without an external mic. Video quality is of secondary importance.

I know Flipcams are popular... how's the audio?

I had a 720 HD variety that used SD cards, so unless the 1080 HD is considerably better, I would say "don't waste your money"

Yes they are very compact but I'm afraid I found the quality was crap ..

there isn't a handycam on the planet that will give you great audio (without an external mic.) they will all be similar levels of "good" and "so so". find a cam that meets all of you other specs and get that one.

Hard to tell from your post, but it sounds like you're looking for a non-camera recorder; ie one that connects to a camera to record audio and video. If your camera has a Firewire port, take a look at one of the Firestore models from Focus Enhancements. Other models are available from CitiDisk and Laird.
