Heyas,

I'm looking for a dock that can charge my 2G Nano without having to connect it to the MBP.

Well, basically I want it to be able to:

when connected to MBP: sync, charge

when not connected to MBP: charge

Has anyone come across to a dock like this?

Try the Apple Dock, find it in the Apple Store, among the iPod accessories.

Couple it with the Power Adapter, and your dock lead, and you have a dock that can charge from any power outlet.

Speaking of the Apple Dock, do you know what type of plastic it is made of? I ask becasue I am going to buy one the next time I am at the Apple Store and then I want to paint it black to match my iPod, I just want to be sure to use the correct type of paint. I am thinking polyethylene.

how about getting another dock cable too then?

or a cable + power adapter, scrub the extra cost for the dock?

not sure, definately thermoplastic, but not sure which. i once opened mine up (it came with my 3G iPod), but didn't notice the PET symbol anywhere in it, which, if I'm correct, is the abbreviation of polyethylene....?

Well, the plan is to have everything in one dock. the dock that has.. its own power adapter to the walloutlet, and a USB connection for the laptop. :p

so you want an adapter, another dock cable, and a dock, for charging, and swapping the charge cable with the laptop cable when syncing?

why not just plug it in to the laptop and eject it so it charges without appearing connected? save a few greenbacks

here is what I do.

Buy an Apple dock. Buy the USB + FIREWIRE cable form apple. (if its still available.) Buy a firewire power charger. (better yet if you have one from the old days.) Run the firewire cable to the power charger, and let the USB cable hang. When you want to sync, plug it in, when you dont, let it hang, and you will still have power via Firewire.

one dock, two cables, on for syncing, one for power. Simple as can be.

Pet is polyethylene terephthalate.

I have looked at them before and they do not say on the dock, abbreviation or recycle symol.
