I bought this Macbook Pro M2 Max, a 2023 Model. I ordered it new from Apple and I ordered almost every possible upgrade I could get, but because I was traveling and spent a lot of time in the airport and on planes, the 14in was a better choice than the 16in.
The main things I use it for are 3D modeling, 3D printing, and controlling my Laser, 3D printers and small CNC.
I love this Mac, but it has 2 issues.
1. I use Fusion 360 to do all of my modeling in. Fusion is single thread. While it does run it a little better than the 11th Gen i7 I had, it is still a bit slow and buggy due to the 3rd party program needed to run it on a Mac.
2. My cat broke the screen. He had walked across my Mac, so I closed the lid. I did not notice that he had left behind a small pebble of cat litter. As cats do, he then sat on top of the closed computer and caused a spot on the screen.
At first it was not a big deal, it was like 5 pixels were bad, I could live with it. However as time went on, more and more of the screen started to get bad to the point now that it just does not work at all.
So, I no longer travel for work, but work from my home office, I have not replaced the stupidly over priced screen and I have it connected to a 37in monitor.
The issue with that is that is still takes up space, has wires coming out every port and just kind of looks like garbage.
I recently acquired 5 Mac Pros. 2 are 2009, and 3 are 2006-2008. One I am restoring to original and making it the beast it can be. One I have converted to an MATX with a Ryzen 7 5800XT and a RTX1080. That is for my flight simulator, the game has to be run on a Windows system.
So, I guess my questions are:
1. is there anything I can do to improve the performance of Fusion on the Macbook Pro, or should I build a PC to run it? With all of the processors going to more and more cores, would I even be able to find a CPU that out performs it on a single thread program like Fusion.
2. Hear me out on this. Because the screen is broken and as it is the Macbook is a mess of cables and looks bad, I had the thought of gutting one of the 2008 Mac Pros and putting the Macbook inside. I am sure I could find a dock that would allow me to use 1 USB cable and mount the dock so all the outputs are at the rear like normal.
I think one of the big advantages with this aside from the clean up of clutter is that I could then plug in my Ethernet and have it be hard wired as opposed to WiFi. Fusion relies heavily on the internet and I wonder if a wired connection might help issue #1.
I would also be able to put the computer on the floor, not on the desk, freeing up space.
Am I crazy? Is there a better option?
Also, is it OK to post pictures and info on my MATX Mac Pro here?(in the Mac Pro area) I don't want to offend anyone with a Mac that has the heart of a AMD Ryzen.
