Hi
I am running a oldish mac pro G5 on OS 10.5.8
I had a WD passport but it would never boot up or **** down with the mac and it failed recently.
Can anyone recommend an external hard drive that will boot up and down as my mac does and which runs well with time machine.
Im looking at a minimum budget is possible.
I have USB 2 but I think I only have Firewire400.

Thanks

Any USB 2.0 or Firewire 400 drive should work well with your PowerMac G5. The fact that the Western Digital Passport wouldn't boot up or shut (typo maybe?) down with your Mac makes me think one of two things:

  • The drive was malfunctioning.
  • The drive was pulling too much current from the USB port.

Borrow another drive from someone else, or try a drive with a power adapter (usually the larger drives) and I'll bet you will have no further problems.

Yeah, go for a powered external desktop (3.5. inch) drive they're usually cheaper per GB than the smaller bus-powered drives anyway.

I'm fairly sure all PM G5s actually have Firewire 800, but those drives will cost more.

They do. The FW800 port is on the back, whereas the port on the front of a PowerMac G5 is a FW400.
