I'm making plans for that new stimulus check. I'm an Apple developer in retirement. I have a project lan with 2 MacBooks a Dell Studio running UBUNTU, an AirPort Extreme and a Time Capsule. My local Goodwill will occasionally have great buys on 'vintage' donated units, I have a HyperDrive Mac as well as a Mac Pro G5 that were $25 each. I'm looking to get the toaster (Hyperdrive) and G5 running on this Lan as well as make a purchase or two.
I do NOT have a specific goal in mind for my Lan, but I thought next step would be sharing files or trying the new Apple ARM based ,machines. While I was excited about the $500 DTK it was a lease only. Given a $800-$1,200 budget, what's my best bet for file sharing in the Apple Ecosystem ?
I could get a machine to develop on with ARM once available. I'm very used to Corvus, Novell and amateur packet networks where there is usually a dedicated machine. How is an apple with file sharing in the background ? What should I expect if I run file sharing on an ARM development MAC ? Is this better than using the NAS on the AirPort ? Within the year I will be using the file sharing to develop a remotely-accessed database. That would most likely require file, record and field locking.
I could venture away by putting UBUNTU on a Dell that's sold for $10 and add my own memory and drives. I've never tried to share files from an Ubuntu to a Mac. Open Source software for the OS and database is a compelling argument, Does anyone have on hand experience with this ?
What would it take to get this G5 up and running ? It's the 1.6mhz, bummer. The DDR3 2gb and 500gb fd still have a blank screen. No I don't have the OS. Is it a decent server platform ? File and Print ?
I got the G5 because I'd thought it was a Pro 5,1 and I'd love to play around inside a Mac rather than a MacBook. I'm also interested in Mac minis.
