Wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction of some good libraries that contain photographs of 'normal' people in either singles or groups, studio or location?

Cost is irrelevant — they're for work. I work for a large UK-based charity and one of the problems we have is finding images of realistic-looking people to reflect age, diversity and community issues.

Now when I say 'normal', I mean more believable than the usual (American I'm sorry to say) glossy, extremely well-groomed, posed shots that are the run-of-the-mill stock-in-trade of libraries like Getty etc.

I'm also not looking for the extreme visual cliches that are usually portrayed in 'social' collections — shirtless gun-toting young black men, pale and gothy-looking pierced teenagers, etc.

Thanks for any help.

Here you go, luv:

Seriously, though, I'll have a look at my bookmarks for stock and see if I can come up with any "non plastic" looking sources.

If it's the British 'norm' that you're after then look no further:

just type "chav scum" into Google - plenty of non-glossy, badly groomed, non-posed pics to be had :D

Came across this link, and some of the people listed there have some more realistic stuff, which might be worth a look. Some of it is really posed and awful though....

Big thanks! Now that looks a lot more promising from a UK perspective... will take a closer look at this tomorrow morning. :)

And as for that chav picture, DCV... shame on you. :D

No problem at all. :) Apologies for linking to a site with the title "gritty real-life". Right up there with "goofy and wacky", in my opinion....;)

A digression - This is fascinating! I've just been to www.chavscum.co.uk - there is a very similar thing in the US - seemed to come on strong in the '90s. The athletic wear / branded wear worked its way "up" through society. It was always interesting b/c the branded items - polo, various shoe makers, tommy hilfiger, a silly brand called abercrombie - were priced just low enough that people who didn't have the money to buy it could but expensive enough that it was worn with pride, to give off a "I have money" image. The effect was usually the opposite b/c (outside of this style adopted by new money celebrity) expensive clothing of course has no garish lables. The other angle to this in the US was the pure sportswear racket - $1 china-made nikes that sold for $120 b/c of heavy marketing and endorsements by sports stars. My sister lives in London, I'll have to ask her about this phenomenon in the UK.

Stock photography of "normal" people

Blue Velvet:

The following is a shameless plug: we supply realistic looking stock photos of people to many non profits and others in the U.S. and Europe. We're at www.harrycutting.com

this is an ancient thread but it keeps popping up when I'm searching for stock photos so here is a few links for the list.

Veer.com - owned by corbis and have a nice collection with various prices and styles
PhotoCase.com - A smaller but very interesting site with more off the wall and artsy type stuff.
Photodune.com - one of the newer stock sites. They mostly have what other stock sites have but have a bit different layout and they have a lot of other useful marketplaces to compliment the photos.
Real Stock Photos - my own site with a small portfolio. I try to create images that are real and genuine but the selection isn't the 10,000,000 you'll find on a big site :)
