I have created a number of calendar events but would love to know if there is a way in linking these together?
Yes, I can do a search using one particular word but that could create more issues (especially if I don‘t want all events with that word, only those linked).

Question being; is there a way in the iOS calendar App or do I need another App that can link events?

When you say linking, what do you mean exactly? Linking an event category maybe? If that's the case, you could create a new calendar for all those events so they would be color-coded. But maybe you're looking for something different.

Thank you.. Your kind reply is not how I am trying to achieve but I can see your logic. Maybe colour coding certain events would work…. I need to look more into that idea.
First question being ‘How do you colour code an event’?

But to elaborate my plan:-
Basically what I am trying to achieve is this as an example:
1. I create an event that gives details pertaining to that day.
2. Some days/weeks/months later I create another timed event that has information which is part what I did in the previous event.
3. Again later I add another event to the calendar app which requires me to know when event one and two were created.

So, in order to be able to link all three events together (similar to a search) it would be simpler when compiling the next event that is relevant to the others all are then linked together…. In other words clicking on any of the events will show me the dates of all other related events.

In the Calendar app, tap on Calendars and you'll see your existing calendars which are color coded. As an example, a couple of mine are Events and To Do, each with a different color. The day/week/month view can show multiple calendars. You can create a calendar for these events you want linked and they'll share the same color in your calendar. You can turn off that calendar if needed as well. The calendars are created as iCloud calendar and so are shared across your devices.

On your phone you're not going to see the colors in month view unless you use the event listing view (the icon to the left of search). In ipadOS and macOS you'll see much more color-coded detail in the different views.

Other than this I don't believe there's an option to do what you're describing, but they're may be in a different calendar app such as Fantastical, about which I know nothing.

Here's more about how these work:

Many thanks Wildsky for your efforts and input. I have added a few new calendars and will see how this goes on.
If only you could bring all the coloured tags showing together, the same as typing a particular word.
I appreciate you can deselect all other calendars but it doesn’t show all events with that particular calendar together, instead you have to scroll through the calendar, you cannot count quickly how many events you have relating to the events you wish to see.

You can add a keyword in the notes field then search it. Add the keyword to each of the related events so they are tied together. Maybe create all 3 and in the notes of each add the dates of the other events so you can just see the reference.

Thanks… Yes, I’ve done this. The only issue is if you forget the keyword for the next event, which I have done… hence why I’m looking at other options.

Have you considered using a different calendar. For example I use Pocket Informant and within that calendar I can create Tags ie Robert,Fred,Doctor etc so then I make I doctors appointment I use the doctors tag. Then when I want to see what either future or part events that were doctors appointment I just do a Tag search for the Doctor tag and then I can get to see all my future and past doctors appointments. It is not a free apps but it is extremely versatile. HTTH.😄

  • If you use the same subject line, I believe calendar will automatically copy over the details from past events. I see this often with my Gym calendar entry. I can set the day/time and it will autopopulate the duration, notification, location, etc. I haven't seen it with notes but that could be because I don't have any.

As a best practice of sorts, I usually have a prefix to my calendar entries.

For example
  • Movie: Deadpool 3
  • Movie: Clerks 3
  • Car: Oil Change
  • Car: Tire Rotation
  • Concert: Imagine Dragons w/ xyz
  • Event: Halloween pumpkin thing
  • Stay: Marriot NYC
  • Vacation: Chicago
  • Skiing: Temblant

Then I only have to search on the prefix I used.

Edit to add:

I also use different calendars for shared types of events with family. I've been helping my brother for example so he shared his calendars with me so I can look at them as needed.

Many thanks to everyone and I do mean that.
Quite clearly I can see you all have given your time and effort and with all of the above recommendations I have a much better understanding in how I am going forward.
Pocket Informant I did use many years ago on Andriod but will look at the App again.
The use of different calendar names each colour coded could work, as would prefix words for search routines.
So much to look at, again thank you everyone. 👏

I have a used PI for at least ten year and have been a beta tester for nine years. It has changed quite dramatically over the years. I am now retired but when I was working I could not have done more job successfully without it. It is sophisticated but at the same time is very ready to use. From your description of what you want to do I think that PI would help. Their hello desk is excellent. Good luck with whatever you choose👍
