I am in the market for a MacBook of some sort however, I’m having some issues...

A few months ago I bought a new 2018 MacBook Air to replace a 2012 Air that had died. I ended up selling it. I’m not much of a “power user” but I was extremely disappointed with the performance of the new Air and found that, for my use, the 2012 MBA actually performed better. I think that the Y-series Intel processor is to blame. I had trouble with basic photo editing. I also needed to run a light office app in a Windows VM and the new MBA really struggled with that. Unbelievably, the 2012 Air was able to run circles around the 2018 version on those heavy tasks, which admittedly are a small part of my typical day. Run of the mill office apps were not an issue.

At any rate, I’m wondering what people may recommend for me going forward. I know that I need a full performance U-series processor but I don’t need anything extremely high-end. While a low end MacBook Pro would probably suit me fine, I have some reservations about the butterfly keyboards and paying more than a grand for what would effectively be middle-of-the-road specs. Any thoughts on picking up a used 2015 or 2017 MacBook Air? I think I can find a decent one for approximately $500. I realize that the knock on those old Airs is the screen resolution but I would be using an external monitor 75% of the time. On the other hand, I have a strong feeling that Apple has taken a left turn with those new T2 security chips and that the existing Macs without that technology will be retired as soon as they reasonably can be.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Here's what I would do if I absolutely needed a laptop
  1. Get a decent 2015 MacBook Air for a low price
  2. Buy a 2020 13-14 inch MacBook Pro in Q1 or Q2 of 2020 if it launches
  3. Sell the decent 2015 MacBook Air
You pay some losses from the MacBook Air but probably not very much and then get the machine you wanted with a keyboard with which you are more comfortable.
