so i wanna get a used iphone 4s att version off CL for the wife, but how can i tell if i am getting the att version though? i know the physical difference from the 4 and 4s, and that's about it. i know it's best to just pop a att micro sim in there to test it out, but i'm with tmo. any tips or cautions to take is appreciated. tks!

btw, i'm in contact with a couple local guys selling the 32gb 4s in mint condition for $500 and $475, does it sound like a decent deal? TIA.

Meet the guy at an ATT store just to make sure the phone hasn't been reported stolen. Test it out and make sure it runs smoothly doing the same things you would do on a daily basis.

If all this works out, only then give the person the money.

Unlike VZW, phones that are reported stolen to ATT have no noticeable effect. ATT is a rare carrier that does not blacklist IMEIs...go to any carrier in Europe or something and device IMEIs can be blacklisted/blocked. In the States, however, only Sprint and VZW blacklist ESNs, resulting in super cheap bad ESN phones on CL.

But andy is right...take it to an ATT dealer. Make sure wifi connects, Bluetooth connects, speakers work, vibrate motor works, and all buttons work. Consider bringing a charger and/or laptop so you can make sure the 30-pin connector is in working condition.

A long shot - but ask a friend who has an iPhone 4/4S to come along and use their micro SIM. This is to make sure the phone properly reads SIMs.

I don't know for sure, but if you go to settings -> general -> about and look at Carrier, you MIGHT be able to tell whether it's ATT or VZW or Sprint. Not sure though.

Just make sure it is a At&t version and that it works fine. Like above poster said if you can have a friend come along that's on At&t and use his sim card to make sure everything works fine.
