I'm wondering which models are known to have problems so I can avoid them? Are there any particular reliable ones? I'm from the UK and unfortunately there aren't any 15" refurbs in the store, and I can't afford the new ones.

i recently picked up a 2013 iris pro 15.4 retina for 1100 on eBay and got $100 ebay dollars to use which I planned to use anyways. I would check ebay. They have pretty strong protections for buyers. At any rate I paid less than a refurb and got a great machine.
