So I'm looking to get myself back into the MacBook pro game as I'm looking for a beefy laptop mainly for writing but with the ability for some good video editing as I'm considering the whole YouTube thing. 1080p would be what I'm most likely working with for editing.

I work at a tech store where I can get a discount so I'm mainly looking at their selection of MacBook pros which are all the new ones released this year ranging from 128GB, 256GB and 512 GB with i5, i7 and i9 processors with about 16GB of ram each.

Just wondering if anyone could help me with narrowing down which one to go for? I'm pretty set on just getting the newest MacBook pro out there so I'm just wondering which one would work best for me. Thanks for the help and if you need more info I'm happy to offer more!

I think you'd be good with the base-model 15". You can buy an external SSD that connects over USB-C to store your video files rather then spending an exorbitant amount of money upgrading the internal SSD through Apple.

Realistically, you'd probably be fine with the 13" too. Sure it will render slower and you won't have the dedicated GPU to help in certain instances, but it would still get the job done.

Video editing programs are relying more and more on the graphics card for processing, so I would recommend getting the best MBP you can afford withh the 512GB hard drive. You will also need an external drive for storing your media separate from the OS. I'd wait and see what is available with the upcoming 16" if you can. You will enjoy the extra screen real estate. I'm using a 2013 15" rMBP now and waiting for the 16'' before buying new.
