I'm looking to replace a multifunction inkjet printer (an Epson Artisan 837) and a Samsung M2835 printer with a single multifunction laser--I never print in color, and periodically turning the Epson on to scan or fax uses up ink in the powerup/self-check sequence, so I keep running out ink despite not using the printer.

I was thinking the Brother MFCL2750DW.

I'm not looking to print from a phone or tablet, just networked Macs. My main question is, how the software support--scanning and faxing? With Apple dropping direct fax support in OS X (i.e., USB modems) I'm stuck with printer software with the few times a year I need to fax, and Epson's fax software is OK at best, and its scanning software leaves something to be desired. Is Brother's Mac software support decent?

Those Brother laser printers look sweet. I'm going to give one of them a try as soon as my HP color printer gives up the ghost. I don't print in color very often anymore but I print the heck out of B&W.

As far as the drivers, you don't need any for the printing/scanning part (printing handled by system drivers, scanning can be done through ImageCapture app). Faxing is handled directly on the printer, according to their documentation on that printer. In other words, you have to print something, then scan it back in to scan directly from the control panel on the printer.

Wait, what? With the Epson Artisan I have, you fax via the Print dialog, choosing Epson Fax as your "printer" instead of the Artisan I am NOT going to print something out just to fax it; that's an incredible waste of paper as well as being plain silly.
Image Capture is a pretty poor scanning app, so I was hoping that Brother had something at least moderately better (e.g., like Epson Scan).

Update: I checked the online manual, and you can fax straight from Mac applications, no printing required.

I just picked up a Brother 2710 (multifunction) several weeks' back. It replaced a 14-year-old Brother laser which still worked, but it was "time for something new".

$130 at Walmart (of all places), with free shipping.

Went together easily, works just fine.

I got an HP M227fdw a couple months ago to replace an old Panasonic roller fax machine. It seems to work pretty well. Scan over the network or to a USB drive, prints just fine, does duplex. Fax works fine though wished it had physical buttons. It asks you to confirm the fax number which is great. I use it with Google Voice. Print quality is pretty good.

AirPrint works pretty well as well.
