Looking to upgrade from a Sony Mini DV Camcorder

I am looking to make an upgrade from my Sony Mini DV Camcorder to an HD Camcorder. A friend and I are going in on it and looking to spend between 2,000 and 4,000 dollars on the investment. We were hoping to achieve near TV video quality on par with say "The Office". Can anyone give me any advice about what camcorder might be a good fit?

I'll be doing editing on my friend's Mac Pro using final cut.

Also, I'll almost certainly need a mic too going by the horrible sound quality I get out of recordings on my current camera.
