I got a call today from a number I don't recognize. My voicemail doesn't work so whoever it was couldn't leave a message. Where can I look up a number and get info on it for free? All the sites I checked are pay sites.

I'd just call but if it's a wrong number, how silly would that be if I called them back. :p

I always call these numbers back. I usually say something like, "Hi, my name is [insert name], and someone at your number phoned me at [insert time and date]."

Well if I do that I should wait until tomorrow. It's past polite calling hours right now. :p

Anyway with the help of a friend (Telp), I have triangulated the approximate location of the phone, and it's nowhere near anybody I know. We've also discovered it's a Verizon cell phone.

Did you try WhitePages.com. I believe they have a reverse directory.

Not telling me anything I don't already know.

I'm getting things like "find out their income". Goddammit, I just want a name! Even if it's just a first or last name! :p

I hate when I get calls and I don't know who they are from. Especially when they are telemarketing calls. Or junk texts for that matter.
At least you found it out though.:apple:

Cell phone numbers won't show up on the reverse directories. Neither will unlisted numbers.

You can go to http://www.fonefinder.net and put in the area code and prefix, and it will tell you whether it's a wireless or landline number, and the carrier that owns it (which isn't 100% accurate due to number portability, but it's a good indication at least....for example, even though I have T-Mobile, mine shows as an AT&T number since that's where I first got it, but it'll at least have the wireless part of it right)
