I have two Lacie SSDs attached to my iMac. One is a 2TB and the other is 4TB. I recently started getting a notice that backups weren't being done to that one. I tried unplugging it, tried a new cable and also tried it on another iMac. No luck. I'm going to guess it failed. I probably have a few TB of drone photos on there along with daily backups from my computer. Nothing that I can't live without but... is there a way to retrieve what is on there? I guess I'll be replacing it soon and will make sure my backup drive has a backup.

I've had a couple of SSDs fail.
In both instances, they just "went dark" -- never to be "seen" again.
Nothing would recognize them -- not any utilities, nothing.

If that's the case with yours, I reckon your choices are:
- send it out for data recovery -- very VERY VERY expensive (if even possible).
- send it back to LaCie for a warranty replacement -- you may get a drive, but NOT "the data".
- put it in the back of the closet and forget about it.

I kind of figured those were my options Hopefully there isn’t anything important on that drive. I believe it’s just a few years of drone photos and videos that I don’t care if I see again. And yeah, as I mentioned in my first post, I’m going to have backups for my backups. Those will be drives that just sit in my safe, not connected to power.

I do Time Machine backups to two different drives in case something like this happens. Two copies is one. One copy is none.
