Forgot that one sorry LOL. It's actually funny because I had mentioned in another thread not to long ago to get rid of that icon and replace it with something else like settings or whatever and some people were like "nooo! I use the clock all the time!!!!"
It is a timer button and the icon matches the Clock app timer tab icon so it makes sense that it would take you to the timer.
I agree with you but that is not how it was working up until now and I don't think anyone noticed. I think people thought it was supposed to take you to the clock app anyway.
Even though threads like these are very annoying I voted I wish it took me back to what I had open.

i wish it was a controllable option to go to the alarm clock. its the only clock functionality i use on a regular basis.
