Is there a piece of software that will let me play an audio file by pressing a key or loop the file by holding down the key? I don't want this to have anything to do with MIDI, just straight audio files (wav probably). If there is no piece of software that does this specifically, is there some way that this could be done?

It would be great if I could also record a sample live (with a microphone) and have it automatically begin looping also.

This piece of software would be like a mellotron that didn't have to rewind it's tapes and could just keep looping if that makes it any more clear.

Anyone know if Live can use key up and key down for triggering? or does key down just toggle. Live is in my tool kit so I am not sure, but it may be able to something like what you are looking for.

If you don't mind a learning curve something like this could be made fairly simply (once you know what is going on) using Pure Data (free/open source) or MaxMSP (not free). Both have great communities.
